Scope & method. Focus = the member-facing moment right after joining (purchase / walk-in → into the app →
first booking). Sources = App Store / Google Play listings & ratings, vendor help centers, and review mining
(Capterra, G2, Trustpilot, JustUseApp, PissedConsumer) + 2024–2026 UX/auth research. Ratings drift daily. Items that couldn't
be confirmed at a primary source are tagged UNVERIFIED. Absence of magic-link/OTP is inferred from
documentation silence, not an explicit vendor "no."
"Mindbody: Fitness & Wellness" · iOS 4.9 (~267K) · Play ~4.85 (~54–58K) · web + embeddable branded widgets
Onboarding: universal Mindbody account linked to each studio profile; "set up your account" verification email; new users are told to tap "Forgot Password" to set their first password. July 2025 forced everyone onto one universal account (traps email mismatches).
Auth: email + password; Sign in with Apple/Google; no magic-link/OTP found UNVERIFIED.
Time-to-value: ~6–8 steps new; ~3 returning (defers profile completion to first booking).
Friction: "multiple accounts under my name… Super hard to navigate""persistent log-in loops and access errors"; duplicate-email → "login locked."
Does well: one account across 40k+ studios; marketplace discovery + intro offers; deferred profile completion.

ABC Glofox
"Glofox" + paid branded "Standalone App" · iOS 4.5 (250) · Play 3.93 (~2.3K) · first-class embeddable web portal (iFrame)
Onboarding: gym pre-creates the account by email; member taps "Register" and sets a password, merged onto the email key — no token/magic link. Generic app forces "find your gym"; branded Standalone skips it.
Auth: email + password; biometric re-login. No social/OTP likely absent.
Friction: "it won't let me type anything and I am unable to find a new gym""I currently can't even log in""sometimes people can book and sometimes they can't"
Does well: no-app web path is first-class + embeddable on the gym's own site; ready-made onboarding email template; branded app removes "find your gym."
Friction (dominant theme = undelivered emails): "could not reset password because reset emails weren't received""Can't get access… don't get the email to change the pass""getting set up took ages"
Does well: single-link invite bundles password + intake; strong trainer-side resend/reset; fast in-app "Things To Do Today."
"Vagaro" · iOS ~4.6 (~8.9K) · Play ~4.25 (~7.3K) · full web parity + marketplace directory
Onboarding: self-created account (email/phone or Apple/Google/Facebook) — not invite/magic-link. Dual OTP on creation (6-digit email code AND 6-digit SMS code). Booking requires an account.
Auth: password or social; mandatory two-step OTP that cannot be disabled.
Friction: "I have to re-login every time""Two factor code issues… logging in at times not possible""creating a profile before booking can be cumbersome"
Does well: single identity across all Vagaro businesses + marketplace; social login; true web/app parity.
"Zen Planner Member App" (Daxko) · iOS 4.6 (~7.3K) · Play 4.6 (count UNVERIFIED) · web portal at studio.zenplanner.com
Onboarding: no self-register; staff creates the account; system auto-emails a password (or member sets one at setup); username = email.
Auth: email + password only; Face ID; multi-gym switching.
Friction (has its own support article for the logout/reset loop): "constantly logs me out and then… says my password is incorrect""I have to constantly delete… and reload it… won't recognize the passwords"; slow loads/crashes.
Does well: dual access (app + web parity); multi-gym account switching; Face ID.
Friction: "it won't let me login through the browser""no option for new members and a cumbersome password reset process"; deactivated members can't sign in and support can't reactivate; Android 3.54★ vs iOS 4.9★.
Does well: automated welcome email = single activation link; multi-surface (iOS/Android/web); beginner-friendly; fast support.
2 · Modern / boutique challengers (the UX benchmark)
Mariana Tek (owned by Xplor)
White-label per-studio native + branded web · aggregate member rating UNVERIFIED
Onboarding/auth: email + password over OAuth (Auth Code + PKCE); no install required (web booking); staff can copy a booking deep-link URL. No magic-link/OTP.
Differentiators: "book in a few taps," 90%+ self-book; one login + one stored card across all locations; pick-a-spot / pick-a-machine (most-praised single feature in this research); pre-order extras/rentals at booking; Apple/Google/Samsung Pay; fully branded.

Walla
"Walla App" native · iOS 4.9 (~4.3K — strongest verified consumer rating in this set) · Play UNVERIFIED · white-label per studio
Onboarding: account-first (create via studio web/widget), then app sign-in (email + password). Flagship fast path: on-site QR → create account + sign waiver + book first class in one scan ("faster than they can walk through your door").
Differentiators: biometric (Face/Touch ID) returning login; QR self check-in with digital waiver auto-filed; waitlist auto-promotion; announcements/push feed. "Wallet integration" claimed (native vs in-app UNVERIFIED).
Friction (top complaint): login doesn't persist / signs users out — Walla publicly acknowledged fixing it. No social layer; no pre-book seat availability.
Onboarding/auth: password-based (email + password; forgot-password reset link). No install required — two-click booking widgets embedded in the studio's own site; lead capture via embeddable sign-up/QR forms.
LoopSpark (loopspark.com) is a staff-only CRM/automation layer on top of Mindbody — no member app; its edge is behavior-triggered pre-arrival SMS/email sequences ("arrive early, sign your waiver here") + 2026 AI text agents. Hapana (formerly OneFitStop)
Member app "Hapana"/"OneFitStop" (white-labeled; ratings UNVERIFIED) · staff "GROW by Hapana" · platform Capterra ~4.5 (92)
Onboarding/auth: email + password (no magic-link/OTP). Members search the business name in the store, install the branded app, tap "Don't have an account? Sign up." Accounts aren't cross-business portable — staff use a jane+1@email.com alias to duplicate.
"TeamUp Member Booking" (2026, 4.0/5, 2) + legacy "TeamUp Members" (3.7, 12) · native apps + full no-app web · business-side Capterra 4.8 (337)
Onboarding:register on the business's website first; the app is sign-in-only ("register with your gym using their website before signing into this app"). Email + password. No install required — web + even Facebook booking.
Differentiators: member app free on all plans; purchase without re-entering card; Zoom auto-link for online classes; calendar sync; push waitlists. Custom Branded App add-on ~$99/mo.
Friction: new-app redesign forced re-auth; more steps for multi-family bookings; removed attendance view; top complaint = password-creation failures.
Only Peloton clearly offers social login; only Apple Fitness+ is truly passwordless (device identity); only Planet Fitness has documented member-scanned QR check-in; none offer a first-party Apple/Google Wallet membership pass — a genuine gap.
Key framing for our case: we already own a verified email + phone (they paid) — activation is a low-friction "prove it's you," not a security gate.
Email OTP keeps the user in-flow (no browser handoff) and creates the account only when the code is entered; magic links are lowest cognitive load but have a mobile failure mode (must resolve in the same browser; iOS opens Safari; Auth0 notes magic links "not supported for Universal Login"; native apps need universal-link handling). Passkeys can't be the first step ("users can only create passkeys after signing up") → use OTP/magic link first, then enroll passkey.
Numbers: passkeys (returning) — KAYAK 50% faster sign-in + 4× fewer errors; eBay double-digit success lift at ~¼ the time of password+OTP. SMS OTP ~90–95% success (US median 4–8s); email magic links ~85–92% (~2.5s). Passkey adoption 2026: 90% aware, ~75% enabled on ≥1 account, ~5B in use. vendor benchmarks — directional
SMS downsides: cost ($50–100k+/yr at 500k MAU), SIM-swap, NIST "restricted" — but those target high-security/financial contexts, not paid-user activation, so SMS remains a legit low-friction fallback.
~98% of users churn within 2 weeks if they don't experience value; day-1 activation ~21%, day-7 ~12% (Amplitude, 2,600+ products). Aha moment lands within the first session (Headspace model).
Don't gate activation behind app install: the extra browser/store hop cut trial starts 27.0% → 18.1% (a 33% relative decline) (RevenueCat/Dipsea A/B). Pinterest PWA: signups +843% YoY, logins +370%.
But native wins retention/LTV later: web wins Month-1 retention (84.5% vs 48.2%), native overtakes by Month 8; in-app LTV $40.10 vs $10.80 web → acquire/activate on web, convert engaged users to native.
iOS PWA push — confirmed at WebKit: web push works only for a PWA added to the Home Screen, on direct user interaction; no push from a regular Safari tab (all iOS browsers use WebKit). Other iOS PWA limits: no auto install prompt, no background sync, ~50MB storage / ~7-day eviction.
Progressive profiling: cap signup at 4–5 fields (each extra field ≈ +3–5% abandonment directional); collect goals/injuries after the first win. Fitness: 82% of trial starts happen Day 0.
What: routes a user to specific in-app content even when the app isn't installed at click time — context survives the store install, applied on first open. Needs an MMP (Branch/AppsFlyer/Adjust).
Strava (Branch): email deep links → "41% of deep-linked clicks result in app engagement"; a Facebook test hit 75% click-to-install; "Clubs" launch drove +21% daily installs. vendor-reported
5b · New-lead: public schedule → signup (how competitors do it)
The question. A gym posts its public class schedule; a prospect (no account) clicks a class. What should happen? We researched 14 platforms (2024–2026, sourced). Verdict: the stakeholder hunch — "show that location's trials / memberships to sign up for" — is the industry default, not an edge case.
The 4 patterns
A · Intro-offer-first self-serve funnel (the mainstream winner). Click class → see that location's intro offers / trials / memberships (intro offer as the hero) → buy → account created inline (guest checkout) → auto-booked into the clicked class → auto-tagged Lead/Trial for nurture. Used by Mariana Tek, Glofox, Wodify, PushPress, Hapana, Arketa, Walla, Mindbody.
B · Account-gated booking. Must log in / buy before the Book button activates. TeamUp (standard path), Vagaro, Mindbody. This is what iliv.fit does today — the friction pole to avoid.
C · Lead-capture-then-sales-touch. CTA is a form ("gym will contact you") + human/CRM close. Zen Planner (flagship "Request Info"), Kilo, ClubReady. Good as a fallback floor, not the primary path.
D · Marketplace. Book on the vendor's consumer app. Mindbody, Vagaro. N/A for us.
Most leaders run A + C-as-floor together.
The exemplar — Mariana Tek "Single-Step Booking & Buying"
Clicking a class routes to a buy page pre-filtered to the intro offers / memberships valid for that specific class; completing purchase auto-books it. Guest checkout, inline waiver, Apple/Google Pay, no app install required to convert — explicitly web-first to acquire, branded app second for retention. The exact opposite of a login wall.
6 UX details worth cloning
Carry class context into checkout — the clicked class pre-filters offers + auto-books after purchase (Mariana Tek — highest-value detail).
Guest / inline account creation, never a login wall — account is a byproduct of purchase (Mariana Tek, Arketa, Wodify, Glofox).
Intro offer gated to genuine new clients + track intro→membership conversion (Hapana Intro Offer Conversions Report, Mariana Tek LTV dashboard).
Never a dead end — capture email up front so abandoners still become nurtured leads (Glofox, PushPress); Glofox auto-assigns the trial + drops them on the calendar.
Auto-tag the signer Lead/Trial → straight into SMS/email nurture (Glofox, Wodify, PushPress).
Web-first to convert, app hand-off for retention — don't force an install to book; Apple/Google Pay covers the no-app-yet lead.

Walla is independent (hellowalla.com), NOT part of WellnessLiving. Trainerize + Kilo are contrast cases (not schedule-first). Guest-checkout (zero record) clearly documented only at PushPress drop-ins + implied Wodify; others create a record inline. Intro-offer commercial format (free first class / $X for 2wk / trial membership) is studio-configurable everywhere — no canonical default.
6 · FitProTracker — our own mirror (self-assessment)
Held to the same standard. Public criticism of FitProTracker is thin and mostly mild — but that's a
visibility gap, not a clean bill of health. Owner-side directory reviews are positive but tiny (7–8 reviews); the sharpest,
most credible negatives are in member app-store reviews and one neutral third-party article, and they cluster
on exactly the two things this project targets: the member booking app is immature, and member login / branded-portal
access is confusing.

Per-gym white-label apps never accumulate reviews, so store ratings aren't a reliable QA signal for us — onboarding/login pain, if present, lives in support tickets / elmah.io, not public stores. So treat "few complaints" as under-reported, not absent.
What members actually say (verbatim)
Client app bugs (best-evidenced):"constantly crashed and is unreliable" · crashes when adding a picture with "no way to contact support in app" · "no schedule and because of no schedule I can't book anything and have to call or text" · "Too bad it can't log your online class."
Immature by admission: a gym-owner reviewer: "The client app for booking workouts is new and still being developed."
Onboarding is heavy:"The setup of the app/account itself takes a very long time. Way too much information required." · "Set up is a bit time consuming and there is a learning curve."
Login / branded-portal confusion (the key one — single neutral source):"Users trying to log in to their gym's branded portal (e.g., app.fitprotracker.com …) but encountering 404 errors, credential resets, or domain confusion."
Other:"Sometimes the history of a chat is not saved"; limited customization; weak third-party integrations; price ("expensive for small gyms," "highest add-on fees").
apps.apple.com/us/app/fit-pro-tracker/id1596009066 · apps.apple.com/us/app/fit-body-booking/id1604020539 · getapp.com/recreation-wellness-software/a/fit-pro-tracker · softwareadvice.com/gym-management/fit-pro-tracker-profile · electronics.alibaba.com/question/fit-pro-tracker-gym-software-explained (neutral 3rd-party, single-source — UNVERIFIED against a 2nd)
Praised: consolidation ("one login replaces five tools"), retention / at-risk-member tracking, high ease-of-use (4.9), responsive support ("one click away"), flat pricing, "highest ROI of any software."
The honest read — and why it's good news. Our two documented member complaints are (1) an immature
booking app and (2) login / branded-portal 404s + credential resets + domain confusion. #2 is
exactly what the iliv.fit → PWA migration + universal links + passwordless activation is designed to
eliminate, and #1 is the surface the whole onboarding redesign improves. We're not chasing a hypothetical — the
onboarding roadmap targets our own top complaint. Caveats: low public footprint means this is
lightly-sourced; the branded-portal-404 quote is single-source; and name collisions (an unrelated "FitPro" smartwatch app,
NordicTrack "iFIT") were excluded.
7 · Synthesis
Common pattern (everyone): gym-provisioned account → email invite → set a password → download the app. Auth is email+password almost everywhere; branded per-gym apps are now table stakes.
Common failures (the whitespace):
The "set your first password" / lost-invite-email trap — #1 complaint across Mindbody, Trainerize, Glofox, Zen Planner, Wodify, PushPress.
Broken session persistence ("keeps logging me out") — Vagaro, Zen Planner, Walla, Kilo, TeamUp, PushPress.
No passwordless (magic-link/OTP) first access — anywhere.
Forced account-before-booking; almost no Wallet check-in pass — only Xplor Gym does Wallet.
Best moves worth stealing: Walla's one-scan QR (account + waiver + first booking) · Xplor Gym's instant-activation + dynamic QR + Wallet passes · Mariana Tek's pick-a-spot & one-login/one-card · Arketa's milestone auto-celebration · Strava's deferred deep link · LoopSpark's pre-arrival SMS.
FPT's defensible wedge: passwordless activation that just works + guaranteed sessions + inline waiver (Digital Documents) + in-app / kiosk-QR check-in — the things the market left on the table. See the "⭐ Gold Standard" tab for the ideal flow.
